Installation
1. What type of computer can by connected
to GTHS service?
The minimum
requirement for GTHS service is a Pentium that can contain
a 10/100Mb Ethernet network card, with at least 32 Mb of RAM, 50
Mb free hard disk space, running in a Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Millennium
environment, NT4SP3, 2000, & Linux, MacOS7.6.1 Open transport
1.1 or more. If you use a USB port, the environment must be Win98,
98SE, Millennium, 2000.
2.
How complicated is it to install an Ethernet network card?
Installing an
Ethernet network card is relatively simple. It can be done the same
way as for any other PC board inside your computer. If your Ethernet
card is the plug-and-play, ready-for-use type and you follow the
instructions, installation should pose no problem. Depending on
your type of computer, you may have to fix IRQ conflicts.
We invite you to contact your computer supplier to solve this.

3.
The cable connecting my computer to the modem is too short. Can
I install a longer one myself?
Yes. However,
it is important to note that the type of cable supplied is a crossed
type cable. You must ensure that the replacement cable is the same
type.
4.
Does the location of the ADSL modem affect performance?
Yes, the many
units on your system can create a magnetic field that will affect
the performance of your ADSL modem. We suggest you locate
your modem at least two feet from your system's units (monitor,
tower, scanner, etc.).

5.
Which is the best way to connect my local network to GTHS service?
The easiest
way is to use a multiple connection box (hub); you may also use
the ADSL modem's USB and Ethernet ports simultaneously.
In this case, you will have to use a straight Ethernet cable. You
must note that these connections will only be operational if you
inform GlobeTrotter of your intention; otherwise, you stand
the risk of receiving an invoice for each unauthorized computer.
Although this might cause security problems, you can connect your
local network to an existing network using a bridge server. GlobeTrotter
does not offer technical assistance for bridges or local network
configurations unless you have a specific agreement to that effect.
6.
I received my modem and completed installation. How can I find out
if connection was made at the telephone exchange?
Connection of
you telephone line to the GTHS service should normally be
done within 5 to 10 working days from your receiving your modem.
You will know that connection was made when your ADSL modem
indicator light stays on. If the ADSL modem indicator light
does not stay on after the normal connection time, call GlobeTrotter
at 1 800 520-4562.

7.
How can I find out if my computer is properly connected to the modem?
If properly
connected, the USB or Ethernet indicator light (depending
on the type of connection) will stay on when your computer is turned
on and the Ethernet network card or USB port is properly
configured.
8.
Do I need to modify my home telephone cabling?
No, GlobeTrotter
High Speed service can be connected to the existing telephone
outlets. You will find up to three (3) filters in the GlobeTrotter
High Speed service installation kit that will allow you to use
your home phones without disrupting GlobeTrotter High Speed
service. If your home has more that 3 phones, you will need extra
filters. They are available at authorized representatives' with
GlobeTrotter High Speed service at the price of $9.95 for
a desk phone filter and $19,95 for a wall-mount phone.

9.
Are filters mandatory for each installation?
Yes, a filter
must be installed on each unit connected to the telephone network.
Note however that you need not install one to the cable connecting
your modem to the telephone network. It is very important to connect
filters the proper way: precise indications are given on the back
of the filter.
10.
Do supplied filters adapt to all types of telephones?
There is no
problem for most telephones. However, a different type of filter
may be required for wall-mount phones. Mention it when picking up
your installation kit.

11.
Can I connect more than one computer to GTHS service?
Yes, but under
certain conditions. GlobeTrotter High Speed service is designed
for a single standalone station and is limited to one IP Address.
However, GlobeTrotter offers the possibility to connect more
than one computer (dynamic IP address allocation) for an extra charge
of $5.00 per month for each additional station in the case of a
home service. For business services, conditions vary. Business customers
wishing to connect two or more computers (network) must contact
GlobeTrotter Business Customer Services at 1
888 955-GLOBE (4562) for information on this service.
12.
12. Can I install a server at home?
Yes, but only
after an agreement to that effect with GlobeTrotter. Basic
GlobeTrotter High Speed service does not allow for the installation
of servers at home. However, a customer who wants such service should
contact GlobeTrotter and the required port will be made available
for a monthly charge of $25.00 (home service) or $50.00 (business
service) including a fixed IP address.
