FAQ

ADSL Technology

1. What is the ADSL Technology?

Briefly, the ADSL technology transforms a standard telephone line by creating a virtual second line, allowing for Web surfing while leaving the telephone line free for receiving or making phone calls. The technology allows for attaining higher speeds than the MVL technology on a standard telephone line. GTHS service using this technology allows the transfer of data at up to 1.5 Mb/sec downstream (to the customer) and 512 Kb/sec upstream (to the Internet). This new technology lets us offer our customers new services without having to change their modem. For more information on this technology, visit the following site: http://www.eicon.com/

What does the acronym ADSL mean?

ADSL = Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line

2. How is it possible to obtain such high speeds on a standard telephone line?

The ADSL technology allows for high-speed data transmission using the copper pair already available between your home/office and the telephone exchange. This is made possible by ADSL using the portion of the bandwidth which is available on telephone circuits. Speeds can attain 1.5 Mb/sec downstream (to the customer) and 512 kb/sec upstream (to the Internet).

3. Can I use such applications as NetMeeting or MIRC with ADSL?

No problem. In fact, GTHS is compatible with all standard Internet applications.

4. What does "standard modem access" mean?

"Standard modem access" or "regular access" refers to the access offered by common modems available in the market (56 kbps or less). This type of access is complementary to GTHS service and allows customers to retrieve their email messages and surf the net from a computer with no GTHS connection.

5. My ADSL modem has an Ethernet port and a USB port. Which one should I use to connect to the Internet world?

You can use any of these two ports. However, you must remember that the modem USB driver is compatible only with computers using Windows 98/98SE/2000. Computers using another O/S will need an Ethernet card and you must use the Ethernet port of the modem.
